Who is behind Flourish?

We are a pair of well-established editors, Tim Dedopulos and Salome Jones. Between us, we've edited over 25 million words. We've worked in publishing houses in both the United States and United Kingdom, and served as literary agents, editors, publishers, and writers, with more than 100 commercially-published fiction and non-fiction books authored between us.

We first began working together on projects in 2011. It’s been such a successful partnership for the books we’ve worked on that we’ve decided to formalize it. As an American and a Brit, we've helped manuscripts from both sides of the Atlantic (and beyond). We look forward to bringing our collaborative approach to your writing.

I started thinking about how the process of learning to write could be better, faster, and easier when I was a graduate student in a Master of Fine Arts in Writing program. There were all these concepts that I felt left to puzzle out on my own, while instructors gave elusive explanations that took months for me to grasp. I began figuring out ways to explain these concepts as the lightbulbs went off in my head. That's what I try to bring to the editing process. An understanding of not just the what and the how, but also the why of writing craft. Why do we do it this way, and why does this bypass the front of the reader's mind to pull him or her into the story?

I have two graduate degrees in writing: a Master of Fine Arts in writing fiction from Pacific University in Oregon, US and a Master of Arts in creative writing from Roehampton University in London, England. I consider myself a writer’s editor, in that as a writer, I understand the stages of learning to write from inside that process and try to tailor my editing and teaching to what I perceive as a writer’s needs. I know that every writer is different, and I try to be open to each writer’s particular difficulties but also to his or her particular goals, voice, style and so on.

It’s a fascinating time for the publishing industry. The e-book revolution is changing everything, and no one quite knows how things are going to turn out. The only certainty is that people are still reading – a lot. It means that there are a load of opportunities for writers at the moment, and that’s really exciting. There’s a whole heap of new talent out there. Which is why I’ve decided to turn to the front lines.

I’ve been working as a writer and editor for more than twenty years. In that time, I’ve had around a hundred of my books published, including genre fiction, illustrated non-fiction, popular culture and much more. Their total sales are well in excess of 3 million copies globally. On top of that, I have worked with other authors in editing, proofreading, commissioning, and/or publishing in excess of 350 more books.

There are a number of things I can do to help, ranging from support services and light polishing right through to open-heart book surgery. I’m just as happy working on non-fiction as on fiction.

Our team approach.

We believe that every client's work deserves our joint care. We each have our particular strengths and preferred areas of focus. Salome likes teaching and line editing. She enjoys dramatic, slipstream, and unusual themes. Tim is fast at summarizing, with a talent for plotting and story structure. He enjoys science fiction, fantasy, horror and other genre work, and has a broad non-fiction background. When we get a new project, one of us will take the lead on it, but some of the work will be split. This way, we make the best use of our abilities and time and give you team support. We've been known to relentlessly assist clients whose work we believe has strong publishing potential, advising about approaches to specific agents, elevator pitches, even helping to rewrite critical sections of manuscripts to wow a specific agent or a publisher. We believe that in the modern, whimsical marketplace, having an experienced team behind you can be invaluable in helping you become a successful author.
